The Kolkata Knight Riders have appointed Shreyas Ayer, a mid-order batsman, for the upcoming IPL as captain. This was announced on (Today) Wednesday by the franchise. He was bought by Kolkata for a mega auction in Bengaluru for Rs 12.25 crore.
He has the experience of leading the IPL before. He captained the Delhi Capitals in 2019 and 2020. Under his leadership, Delhi made its IPL final for the first time in 2020. However, due to injury problems, he was unable to play in the early 2021 IPL. Therefore, Rishabh Pant was made the captain of the Delhi team in his place. He returned to the team in the second leg of the UAE tournament. However, DC decided to retain Rishabh Pant as captain. Therefore, the Delhi franchise did not retain Shreyas for the IPL this year. Shreyas will now replace England's limited-overs captain Eoin Morgan. Under his leadership, KKR reached the final last year.
He said,"I am just happy to be able to lead such an honorable team as KKR. The IPL is a tournament in which the best players in the world play. I am excited to lead a group of talented players. Thanks to the owner, management and support staff for giving me the oopportunity"
